What is SAP?

SAP is not a new field. It was first set up in Germany in the 1970s by a handful of ex-IBM engineers. The project was so successful that the original company, which is now known as SAP AG, in Walldorf, Germany, now has outlets in more than fifty countries worldwide. Companies will have SAPS installed on their computer networks to supplement existing program, to help a company stay up to date with the latest changes in business processes, and also to help them gain an advantage over their competitors. Having SAPS installed can also help a company save money.

What SAP Does

SAP is made up of a number of aspects, or modules as they are known. Companies have SAP installed because it helps to improve many of their everyday computerized business processes. The various modules have different purposes and will usually include the following:
  • Quality Management: The SAP module is designed to help improve the quality of goods and services from the production through to the inspection and certification stages.

  • Sales and Distribution Module: This helps to track a job from the original order through to the delivery and may include pricing, packaging, and shipping of an order.

  • Financial Accounting Module: This module simplifies various accounts, ledgers, payments, and anything to do with tax. This is often used in conjunction with two other modules, including Asset Management, which relates to a company’s assets and their depreciation or growth over time. The Controlling Module relates to the various cost, profit, and loss centers of the company.

  • Production Planning Module: This handles everything to do with the production of goods and services so that they are easy to track. The Materials Management Module enables a company to keep track of their supply chain, inventory management, and accounts that need to be paid.

  • Human Resources Module: This module handles all of the staff details including their employment history, payroll, career progression, and training. An extra attraction of this particular module means that it is much easier for a company to undertake their staff recruitment online. Online recruitment is on the increase and may be the recruitment future for many industries.
Other SAP modules include Cross Application (CA) which handles business information and solutions, project solutions, and keeps track of projects from their inception through to the billing of third parties. Finally the Plant Maintenance Module allows a company to keep track of equipment, labor, and any company downtime.
